DIANA DERII

Diana Derii is a Ukrainian multimedia artist who specializes in media art. She is based and works in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine. She graduated from the Lviv Academy of Art, and received a bachelor's degree in conservation and restoration of art. She began her practice in 2019 and since has focused on video art, video installation, light installation, performance, and generative art. Diana's work is characterized by a deep exploration of geometric forms and the interactions between light and darkness, as well as the relationships between humans and the spaces they inhabit. Her work often uses projected imagery, light, and sound to create immersive, multi-sensory experiences for viewers. Diana debuted as a curator at a multimedia group exhibition “Cnoty'' which included young LGBT+ artists at a 63-boiler factory in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine (December 2021).

Vision of Life, 2022

Single-channel video, HD, color, stereo, 7’44’’

The video was shot on thermal imagery during an air alarm after a curfew on the streets of Ivano-Frankivsk, Western Ukraine. During night time, electricity is turned off and citizens are asked to obey the wartime electricity regulations.  The streets are plunged into complete darkness. One can only observe the activities happening on the streets with  the special equipment. Through these new optics I am capturing the life outside of loud explosions and clickable headlines, everyday life and a routine of wartime. The artwork highlights an intimate story in the dark streets of  Ivano-Frankivsk that mirrors Ukrainian life. The video represents our new reality.
